Fontenay le Comte 15 km Niort 29 km Parthenay 42 km La Rochelle 65 km Set in rolling countryside at the Southern end of the Vendée, the property dates mainly from the 12th Century with some parts darting back to the11th Century and mention of further history back to 540AD. The Chateau spans 1000 years of French history, with evidence of the 100 years war with England and also residence of the Knights Templar. Many original features still remain including an impressive vaulted cellar built in the 11th century and part of a long-gone network of tunnels running between important houses in the area. The wide stone staircase and many beautiful stone fireplaces also give credence to its long history. Now it is a spacious home, nestled in the gently rolling Vendéen landscape, perhaps still hiding many secrets of times past. The main living areas are renovated to a very high standard and level of comfort without losing the character and historical detail. There is central heating (underfloor in the main living areas), woodburning stoves in both the kitchen and salon, double glazing and internal shutters. There is a subsidiary large living area boasting three double bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms suitable to be used for family, staff or gites. It is set up as a two-bedroom apartment and a separate one bedroom with sitting room that can be integrated with the main apartment or closed off to be used as an independent unit or as additional accommodation to the main house. (At present used as an artists studio). Both these areas have access to both the front and back of the house. The nearest town is Fontenay le Comte, 15 km, with all shops, schools and services. Equestrian The area is well served by all things equestrian. The closest neighbour has 2 driving horses and there are many horse owners close by. Very good farriers, vets, dentist and physio are all local. A neighbouring farmer makes the hay from the present owners’ fields. He also cuts their supply of winter wood from their small wood adjoining the paddocks. Hay / straw also available locally. Feed merchant at Fontenay. 10 mins away, at Coulonges sur L'Autize, is a very good, large equestrian centre and pony club where adults and children are taught (Shetland ponies to competition horses) and you can also take your own horse. They have very large indoor and outdoor arenas and hold regular competitions, both affiliated and unaffiliated, in all disciplines (including national western 3 day show!) They provide part/full livery (it is where the owners kept their horses until their facilities were built). At Fontenay Le Comte, 15 mins, is another big equestrian centre ranked 5th in the Vendée for training students for higher level professional qualifications. It provides the same facilities as the centre at Coulonges but with smaller arenas. 15 mins in another direction, is a small friendly riding school into natural horsemanship and T'ai Chi - they have a 20 x 40 outdoor arena. Affiliated SJ is held at the sport stadium in Fontenay-Le Comte. Le Trec is held locally throughout the summer and hunting throughout the winter. 40 mins away at Bazoges en Pared, eventing up to international level. 10 mins away is a livery, stud and training yard run by an ex-eventer and his wife. They hold competitions during the summer. For driving enthusiasts there are many organised rallies. The French National School of Equitation is at Saumur, 1 hr 30mins.
